How Playoffs Work Under the New NHL Divisions
-Top 3 teams in each division make the playoffs.
-Wild card teams are seeded seventh and eighth in each Conference (allowing for a maximum of 5 teams from one division per conference in the playoffs).
-Division winners are seeded first and second in each Conference and meet the wild card teams in the opening round of the playoffs. (1-versus-8 and 2-versus-7).
-Teams finishing second and third in each Division play the first round of the playoffs within the Division regardless of how teams are seeded 3-6.
-Second round is 2 winning teams from each division playing off (if 1 of the Wild Card team wins round 1 and is the 3rd team from same division, they would play against winning team from the other division)
-Round 3 is 2 winning teams from East and 2 from West
-Final round for Stanley Cup is East winner vs West winner.

Dave - publish the spreadsheet and share that published link instead of the direct link to the spreadsheet. It will produce a different view.

A couple things btw:
- would it be possible to make colours in divisions pts columns much lighter? on my screen, just like last year you can barely read pts in the WC and the red in EC columns bothers eyes.
- first tie breaker is total matchup wins, not total wins (written that way it could be interpreted as total stats wins).
in which way? I think 2nd round matchups are within conference?dave1959 wroteCOLON -After the first round, teams are reseeded and the next round's match-ups are determined.
Still think we shold move away from the retardness of the blocked seeds.
As I wrote in the past:
so, the team that wins the conference should face in the 1st round the worst team of its conference, not necessarily the 2nd wild card team.i'm fine with the top 3 teams of each division to be granted a playoff spot no matter what, but having their seed protected on top of that seems retarded.
Why should a team like Montreal that has more pts than any team in the Metropolitan save for the Penguins (and could even top them) receive a worse seed than the Islanders and the Rangers?
I would get reserving the seed of the division winner, but beyond that?
...
i think taking away that block in determining the playoff seeds (not spots) would help fairness along with enhancing interest in the last few weeks as standings would be more dynamic.
In the West the situation is not much better, as i'll be rated lower than a team like PHX that will finish with 40 less pts than mine. This also screws the top 2 teams in the conference, as they will face a better opponent despite the fact they earned the right to face the 2 worse qualifiers in their conference.
And if the 2nd placed team (the other division winner) had indeed the 2nd best record, it should face the 2nd worst team in the conference, not necessarily the 1st wild card team.
Because it's only fair, and on top of that would increase the chances the last games of the regular season matter for teams competing for playoffs spots/seeds.

Re: 2015/16 STANDINGS
Thanks Dave! but LAK season record should be 2-1-0 instead of 1-2-0

might be a good idea to share the rights to edit that doc so that you don't end up getting bothered by anything you have to fix yourself otherwise.
Change of colous very appreciated btw.
First tie-breaker still to be fixed.

Re: 2015/16 STANDINGS
Do we still go by category wins and not matchups/weeks won?

42 points and last in the league. Who had me as a playoff team? I'd certainly reconsider that prediction...

GP max for goalies, I'd go over it if I played him and Mason all year together. Neither is going anywhere in the midst of a rebuild.lightupdadarkness wroteCOLONPetr Mrazek would love to play I'm sure, or be tradedfoofnik wroteCOLON42 points and last in the league.
