GWT - Week #22

Post by Matthew »

Anaheim Ducks vs San Jose Sharks - ANA now has a 6 week winning streak. SJS has lost a large early season lead of 3rd in the Pacific, and is now in danger of falling a spot in the standings.

Calgary Flames vs Arizona Coyotes - CGY hopes to crush ARI in order to pass SJS this week.

Edmonton Oilers vs Dallas Stars - EDM managed to bust the funk by finally winning a match VS VAN last week, putting an end to its 12 week losing streak. Edmonton is likely to make it 2 W in a row. Dallas is without a single win this season, though they do possess a single tie vs Toronto.

Los Angeles Kings vs Vancouver Canucks - LA Wins. Both teams share in the happiness.

Chicago Blackhawks vs St. Louis Blues - The 2 WildCard Teams in the West Faceoff (only 11 points apart) to see who will matchup vs LA in the first round, and who will get somebody, anybody, else. If St Louis were to lose this week badly enough, they are now in danger of being passed by WPG, who sit 19 points back with 2 weeks remaining.

Colorado Avalanche vs Nashville Predators - GAME OF THE WEEK: WESTERN EDITION UGLY TIE ALERT! Both these teams lost last week, yet remain in a tie atop the Central with 401 points. It was the end of a 9 week winning streak for Nashville, and Colorado's 2nd loss in a row.

Minnesota Wild vs Winnipeg Jets - The Jets look to rocket into 8th this week (19 points back), but that will be tough to do against a Wild Wild team that handed LA its 2nd tie of the season last week. The Wild are only 2 points back of Colorado & Nashville, and could use this weeks matchup to leapfrog those two toads.

Boston Bruins vs Ottawa Senators - Ottawa is 2-2 in its last 4 weeks, and was close to beating Tampa last week. Boston is pretty much set in the Atlantic #2 spot.

Buffalo Sabres vs Montreal Canadiens - 2 Points separate these 2 teams for the 3rd spot in the Atlantic. The difference could be that Buffalo has a roster of walking dead. 3 BUF dressed players (MacKinnon, Bordeleau, Lander) are injured, with Perreault, Kane and Gudas on the IR.

Detroit Red Wings vs Toronto Maple Leafs - Toronto has a 30+ Point lead over 2nd in the East. At this Point he is just Killing for Sport...amassing heads upon Pitchforks outside his Arena...as a warning to all future playoff opponents.

Florida Panthers vs Tampa Bay Lightning - Barely Scraping by OTT last week has hurt TB. Tampa is 8 points back of NJD for the final WildCard SPot in the East. Florida is 8 points back of the *Humiliating Season Line*

Carolina Hurricanes vs Philadelphia Flyers - We could probably call this the TRASH TALKING MATCH OF THE WEEK. This should be fun for all onlookers.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs New York Rangers - The Rangers are just 14 points back of NJD, and with the Jackets making a few moves to hurt their current team, the rangers may able to steal the few extra points needed to make week 23 that much closer.

New Jersey Devils vs Washington Capitals - Washington is 5 points ahead of PITTS for the Atlantic Division lead, proving he may be the real deal contender in the Atlantic, despite what NYI will tell you. The Devils need a prayer at this point, with the hungry Rangers and Lighting hot on his pointed tail.

New York Islanders vs Pittsburgh Penguins - GAME OF THE WEEK: EASTERN EDITION The Isles have lost 2 in a row to ARI/WASH. The Pens lost last week to PHI. Perhaps this Match should be refered to as GAME OF THE WEEK: 2 teams treading water. Either way, a win here could give PIT the Division throne.

TRADE DEADLINE (March 2nd) ASSET MANAGEMENT: WINNERS AND LOSERS

Paul's Verdict **General legend**
Winner (TEAM SITUATION/STANDINGS) - based on their team/standing situation, that was the right kind of move to make in achieving it!
Loser (TEAM SITUATION/STANDINGS) - based on their team/standing situation, I think you would've been better off holding onto your assets!

NOTE: I had to choose 7 Winners, 7 Losers, and 1 Neutral.

ATLANTIC

BOSTON
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

BUFFALO
incoming: Nicolas Kerdiles, Stefan Matteau, Dylan Sadowy, 2015 3rd rounder (NJD), 2015 4th rounder (NJD), 2015 4th rounder (CGY), 2015 waiver (NJD)
outgoing: Jason Demers, Jonas Gustavsson, Tom McCollum, Jared Coreau, Daniel Larsson, Jake Paterson, Jordan Pearce
Fraser Says: Bringing in young productive AHLers, and a wealth of middle picks without hurting his roster. Deals like this will set up your depth long term. Could be a steal somewhere in that pool of young assets, with this many horses in the race one is bound to take some significant strides. Good day.
Paul's Verdict: NEUTRAL.

DETROIT
incoming: 2015 3rd rounder (NYI), Ryan Carter, Danius Zubrus
outgoing: Ryan White, Sean Bergenheim, 2016 4th rounder (MIN), 2015 5th rounder (TBL)
Fraser Says: Not sexy. Not bad. Picks up a higher pick and some NHL depth.
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (rebuild)

FLORIDA
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

MONTREAL
incoming: Jarrett Stoll, Andrej Sekera, Dana Tyrell
outgoing: Derek MacKenzie, Ryan Collins, Dmitri Kulikov, 2016 7th rounder (MTL)
Fraser Says: Whenever you can bring in a center like Jarret Stoll you have won the day. Cap manipulation was the name of the game for chuck today, and today he definitely came out ahead. Picking up two LA kings who will be playing for their playoff lives down the stretch should bring strong contributions to his squad, this is a clear win on the day through and through.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (contending)

OTTAWA
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

TAMPA BAY
incoming: 2016 2nd rounder (EDM), 2016 3rd rounder (SJS), Martin Reway, Alex tuch, Josh Morrissey, William Nylander, Teemu Pulkkinen
outgoing: 2015 2nd rounder (VAN), 2016 4th rounder (TBL), Dominic Moore, Matt Duchene
Fraser Says: Tampa completes the team tear down in dramatic fashion with a last minute deal to acquire pieces to assemble what is now the best prospect pool in the BBKL. With playoff hopes dwindling Nick saw an opportunity to bring in a wealth of talent that could return Tampa Bay to the BBKL penthouse down the line, and he didn’t hesitate. This is a franchise shaping move, if half of these guys hit their potential Nick wins today, one of those deals that will be looked back on for years in the BBKL.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (rebuild)

TORONTO
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

METROPOLITAN

CAROLINA
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

COLUMBUS
incoming: Nick Ritchie, Haydn Fleury, Jason Demers, 2015 3rd rounder (MTL)
outgoing: Brandon Dubinsky
Fraser Says: In a deadline day special, Dave tears down the once thought to be available Kopitar off the block, and replaces him with the concussed Dubinsky. This BBKL all-star didn’t stay on the market long, bringing in two top 10 2014 picks and a strong contributor on the back end. It will come down to Dubinsky’s health and player development to determine if this was the right move to make. With Fleury struggling it was a risk to take, but the all around contributions projected by Ritchie makes him seem to be a lock to be a BBKL star. But when you can move an injury risk for this kind of package, you don’t say no. Big day for Dave.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (re-tool)

NEW JERSEY
incoming: Jonas Gustavsson, Tom McCollum, Jared Coreau, Daniel Larsson, Jake Paterson, Jordan Pearce
outgoing: Dylan Sadowy, 2015 3rd rounder (NJD), 2015 4th rounder (NJD), 2015 4th rounder (CGY), 2015 waiver (NJD)
Fraser Says: Completing the Red Wings tandem and nearly completing the system today provides NJ with the most solid goaltending outlook they have had all season. Sitting on the cusp of the playoffs this could be a series saver if an injury occurs. Look for the devils to target Mrazek closer to the draft.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (contending)

NEW YORK ISLE
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

NEW YORK R
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

PHILADELPHIA
incoming: Brandon Dubinsky, Matt Duchene
outgoing: Stefan Matteau, Nicolas Kerdiles, Nick Ritchie, Haydn fleury, 2015 3rd rounder (MTL), Alex tuch, Josh Morrissey, William Nylander, Teemu Pulkkinen
Fraser Says: Lee blows his metaphorical prospect wad all over the BBKL’s face. Bringing in two potentially elite BBKL centers going forward. We all know how damn hard it is to bring in centers, and the Flyers are now rock solid down the middle. These aren’t your dad’s Flyers no more, and an elevation from the basement next season looks likely. If Dubi can stay healthy and Duchene and the Avs re-find their scoring prowess, adding these two alone should help push Lee towards playoff contention in 2016. But when you move out this much top end young talent, there’s gonna be at least a guy who burns ya down the road. How severe those burns will be is yet to be seen.
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (rebuild)

PITTSBURGH
incoming: Nick Bonino, Brian Dumoulin, Stefan Elliott
outgoing: 2016 6th rounder (NSH), Paul Stastny
Fraser Says: Pittsburgh makes a move to significantly cut cap by bringing in the similarly productive Nick Bonino at 1.9 mil opposed to the albatross contract in Stastny at 7X7, while picking up a promising young defenseman who was buried by youth depth and some bust from Colorado. After a deadline day where Pittsburgh moved both Despres and Bortuzzo, Dumo has jumped up the youth depth list, causing this trade all kinds of headaches for the stupid GM on the other side. But then the Canucks dominated the Blues by winning in a shootout so a 2016 6th rounder was added, clearly tipping the scales. Huge Loss for the Penguins.
Paul's Verdict: Loser! (contending)

WASHINGTON
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

CENTRAL

CHICAGO
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

COLORADO
incoming: Nate Prosser, 2016 3rd rounder (DAL)
outgoing: Ryan Clowe, 2016 2nd rounder (COL), 2015 3rd rounder (COL), 2015 4th rounder (COL), 2015 4th rounder (NSH)
Fraser Says: Prosser. He’s a depth defenseman. Sweet.
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (contending)

DALLAS
incoming: Raffi Torres, 2015 Waiver (NSH), 2016 3rd rounder (FLA), Dmitrti Kulikov, Ryan Clowe, 2016 2nd rounder (COL), 2015 3rd rounder (COL), 2015 4th rounder (COL), 2015 4th rounder (NSH)
outgoing: Patrick Eaves, Andrej Sekera, 2015 4th rounder (NSH), Nate Prosser, 2016 3rd rounder (DAL)
Fraser Says: In an incredible value add move, Dallas picks up Nate Prosser off waivers days before flipping him for 3 middle round picks this year and an upgrade on their 2016 3rd. This may be the win of the day, as these the type of value swings that will get the BBKL stars out of the basement, all while shaming the team that waived him last week that shall remain nameless from St. Louis
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (rebuild)

MINNESOTA
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

NASHVILLE
incoming: Patrick Eaves, 2016 4th rounder (TBL), Steve Bernier, Mike Ribeiro, 2016 4th rounder (CAR), Sean Bergenheim, 2016 4th rounder (MIN),
2015 5th rounder (TBL)
outgoing: Raffi Torres, 2015 Waiver (NSH), 2016 3rd rounder (FLA), 2016 2nd rounder (EDM), 2016 3rd rounder (SJS), Mikael Wikstrand, Nikita Scherbak, 2016 1st rounder (NSH), 2016 3rd rounder (FLA), Ryan Carter, Danius Zubrus
Fraser Says: The long awaited Mike Ribeiro sweepstakes have come to an end! After 5 months of gripping anticipation, Mik stepped up to the plate and snagged this much sought after commodity in dramatic fashion closing the deal with seconds to go before the deadline buzzer! (But actually like 7 minutes too late or something). Nashville clearly sees themselves in win now mode, and is going all in targeting multiple depth pieces. It will all come down to playoff performance to determine if today was a win, but the tools are in place for the BBKL predators to take a run at a title.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (contending)

ST LOUIS
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

WINNIPEG
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

PACIFIC

ANAHEIM
incoming: 2015 2nd rounder (VAN), Mikael Wikstrand, Nikita Scherbak, 2016 1st rounder (NSH), 2016 3rd rounder (FLA)
outgoing: Steve Bernier, Mike Ribeiro, 2016 4th rounder (CAR)
Fraser Says: Anaheim continues their long anticipated re-build, bringing in some potential top end young talent for some old scrubs taking up space. It is worth highlighting, with the inevitable draft lottery win by Vancouver that 2nd rounder will essentially become a late 1st. Making todays returns all the more fruitful. The future of the ducks win today.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (retool)

ARIZONA
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

CALGARY
incoming: Michal Neuvirth, Mike Blunden, Ryan White, Dominic Moore
outgoing: Chad Johnson, David Moss, 2015 3rd rounder (NYI), Martin Reway
Fraser Says: Calgary maintains their NYI goalie system bringing in Neuvirth and brings in a strong deadline depth addition in Moore, who should be playing some important games down the stretch. AND has already notched his sixth tally since being acquired. Strong deadline by Josh.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (contending)

EDMONTON
incoming: Chad Johnson, David Moss
outgoing: Michal Neuvirth, Mike Blunden
Fraser Says: Did NHL insiders get wind of this potential goalie swap in the BBKL and followed suit? Or was it the other way around? Either way this was our copycat deal of the day. Edmonton brings in Johnson who should get more opportunity to see the net in Buffalo than Neuvrith will behind Halak.
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (rebuild)

LOS ANGELES
incoming: Derek MacKenzie, Ryan Collins, Paul Statsny, Calvin De Haan, Jared tinordi
outgoing: Jarret Stoll, Mike Giordano, Tyler Bozak
Fraser Says: Steve gave the western conference another shock, as he unloads his recently fallen superstar and loads up for another shot at the title, while bringing in a couple young defensemen who should help the long-term depth of the LA Kings. As Gio would have been watching from the sidelines, this is a clear win for Steve.
Paul's Verdict: LOSER! (contending)

SAN JOSE
incoming:
outgoing:
Fraser Says:

VANCOUVER
incoming: Mike Giordano, Tyler Bozak, 2016 6th rounder (NSH)
outgoing: Calvin De Haan, Jared tinordi, Nick bonino, Brian Dumoulin, Stefan Elliott
Paul Says: Initially fooling us with the thought "total rebuild" upon taking over vancouver franchise, GM Fraser started accumulating all-around in general younger but not necessarily "better", types of assets left and right. It started with the strip-down of Erik Karlsson, and eventually landed much mysterious but sought-after Johnny Gaudreau in exchange for one of his best centreman in Henrik Sedin. It appears he had a plan afterall because through witnessing the explosion of Zack Kassian in which he paid heavy price to acquire, he has kicked it up a notch in the last stretch of season just before deadline by acquiring the proven best of NHL d-men in Mark Giordano and a solid BBKL-friendly H2H oriented centerman in Tyler Bozak to round off his raw but extremely talented mix of the canucks franchise. This team screams of youth and potential, and at the same time, has made just the right amount of moves to tee himself up to begin the 2015 off-season with a strong message to fellow rebuilders and contenders that he will prevail as one of the bountiful teams mixed with abundant future/quality NHLer assets. VAN will be a major player in controlling BBKL's trade market and value as this team is ready more or less to start contending next year on.
Paul's Verdict: WINNER! (retool)

can't wait for the deadline write-up!

meanwhile...

terrible first day of the week, looks like Plekanec didn't like the late Ribeiro acquisition and post-deadline chemistry might be an issue.

going over the deadline deals and i would say no one made any bad deals.

Matthew, lightmydarkness, Dave and Nick added great prospects and picks going forward. A few of us added some depth going into the playoffs. The best 2 players went to Lee.

MacKinnon should be fine, only a broken nose. Didn't expect Lessio to go down he had been giving me some SOG and hits every week. Hoping one of Bordeleau or Lander plays this week, but was already at a GP disadvantage without 2 holes in my lineup.

Just hoping I don't get killed by both Chuck and Mike and finish 8th. If I'm 7th I think I have a chance at an upset.

I kind of figured we'd be the game of the week given the implications of this matchup for us coupled with the fact we ate similarly designed teams who will match up very well against each other. Should be an entertaining week to be sure!!!!

The long awaited Mike Ribeiro sweepstakes have come to an end! After 5 months of gripping anticipation, Mik stepped up to the plate and snagged this much sought after commodity in dramatic fashion closing the deal with seconds to go before the deadline buzzer! (But actually like 7 minutes too late or something).
on this matter:
- confirmation came late cause that dumb ANA GM had the deal wrong in his post!
- I actually want my Scherbak back! (Would leave Alexei to Matthew though)
- but but... I know the league would never ever think of calling that deal back cause it may face another long season of Ribeiro blocks!
